Out with the Old, and in with the New!
Out with the old, and in with the new! The old name for my class (Guidance) is out, and the new name (CAPS) is in! Cleveland City Schools deleted "Guidance" from our vocabulary, so my class had to be renamed. The Cleveland City School counselors met and brainstormed to find a more suitable name for our time with our students. Many names made the list, but weren't quite up to par. Finally, when talking about our purpose, the name "CAPS" was put on the table. As counselors, we wanted our coveted time with students to inspire success. Not only did we want our students to achieve success now, but we also wanted our students to gain skills that will ensure success for the rest of their lives. We wanted our students to be successful in learning about careers, choosing a career, and one day working in a career. We wanted our students to be successful in the academic arena now and to grow into life-long learners. Finally, we wanted our student to be successful in their personal and social lives. If one puts the first letter of those areas into a word, CAPS is created. The name CAPS serves as a continual reminder of the passionate purpose to teach success in the areas of Careers, Academics, and Personal/Social. Each CAPS class will address at least one of these three areas. The next time your child has CAPS, ask him or her about the lesson and see how we learned to be successful in that class. Don't forget out with "Guidance" and in with "CAPS".

Welcome to the 2012-2013 school year!!!!! Here's an interesting academic fact to start a new school year. Did you know dictionary publishers delete words from dictionaries as words become obsolete? It happens all the time! This year Ross and Cleveland City Schools are deleting an obsolete word from our vocabularies. The now obsolete word is "Guidance." Replace that old, worn out, dilapidated word with new, fresh, exciting names. Instead of "Guidance Counselor" say "School Counselor." Instead of "Guidance Class" say "CAPS Class." While this is just a small change in verbiage, it reflects larger changes that our system counselors are making to stay relevant to students and parents. Watch for the changes, and practice, practice, practice your new words. :) ~Mrs. Emily Elliott

It's SUMMER, and it's time for all the fun that goes with it! Summer brings so many happy, fun memories. Catching lightning bugs, going to camp, learning to swim and ride a bike, sliding on a slip-n-slide, trips to the library, camping, helping on the family farm, crafting with my Grandmother, and playing at the park with cousins made summer so very special for me.What made your summer special? Take some time and share those memories with your kids...then pass the experience on to them. Those times with you will quickly become treasured memories for them as well. :)
